Newf Mixes (Mixed breed Newfoundland dogs/puppies) -  San Luis Obispo, CA: Max in San Luis Obispo, CAMax in San Luis Obispo, CA  Is this not the most precious Newf mix you have ever seen?  This is Max, a Newf mix who was mistakenly thought to be a Bouvier des Flandres.  Max is currently in the care of Bouvier des Flandres rescue, however, they can't keep him as they do not have the funds nor the room to care for him.  If you can help Max, please email Judy here.  Following is more info about Max as provided by the Bouvier rescue home that is looking after him:

"Max is between 7-8 years of age.  He is neutered.  His  shots are up to date.  Thyroid testing has been done by Bouvier rescue.  Max will need
thyroid checking again in another two weeks.  Max needs to go to a home with no other pets; he will make a good companion to an adult who doesn't want to go to the dog park.  Resource guards, but can eat dinner with my bitches; guards toys and food treats as it is stuff that he perceives as his that sparks misbehavior. He needs a mentor who will work with him to modify his behavior.  He strong, when you want him to do something he doesn't want to do he turns into a 100lb sack of cement (going back into the kennel, to the vet etc.)  I've just been muscling though his tantrums making him do what I intended.  He is smart, has picked up on what little training I have been able to do with him.  Sit, wait (at the gate) go lie down in the house (with other dogs).  He bears grooming easily, not real good for nails, but who is.  I have all the surrender descriptions from the San Luis Obispo Shelter.  For a rescue dog he has quite a bit of into.  He is listed on our website www.scbdfc.com  The people that have seen him have been too squashy to be his owners, he needs a gentle but firm alpha leader."

UPDATE (6/18/2009):  I am not exactly sure about the status of this boy.  He is no longer available for adoption which could mean he was adopted, or he may have been euthanized.  Update:  I learned today (Tuesday, June 16) that this dog is more than likely a Border Collie mix and not a Newf mix.  Regardless, he still deserves to be rescued or adopted into a loving home.  #70600 Urgent In MO This sweet dog became available for adoption on May 18.  It is now June 11 and still no one has offered to help him.  PLEASE call the shelter if you can adopt/rescue him!  This beautiful 2 year old Newf mix does not have a name, but goes by #70600.  He is currently at the Jefferson County Animal Control in Barnhart, Missouri (south of St. Louis).  If he is not adopted or rescued, he will be euthanized SOON!  If you can help this boy, call the shelter at 636-797-5577 and refer to him by his reference number #70600.

PetfinderWhether you want a dog, puppy, cat, kitten, hamster, etc., be sure to check Petfinder every day!  Also, both purebred Newfoundland dogs/puppies and Newf mix dogs/puppies are listed on Petfinder.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY DOGS/PUPPIES FROM PET STORES, ONLINE, VIA A NEWSPAPER, ETC.!!!
Under NO circumstances should you purchase a dog/puppy unless you are able to meet the breeder IN PERSON.  A truly reputable, responsible, trustworthy breeder will want to meet you face-to-face.  If you can't meet a breeder in person before purchasing a dog/puppy, DO NOT follow through with the purchase.  The very best breeders (no matter what breed of dog) will want to meet you.  From my experience, the very best breeders (no matter what breed) will always take back any and all dogs/puppies they place no matter what the reason.  If the breeder you choose does not agree to take back a dog/puppy he/she places, DO NOT purchase a dog/puppy from that breeder.

On another note, many people are breeding purebred Newfoundland dogs with other breeds.  Some of these people claim the puppies they produce have all the characteristics of a purebred Newfoundland dog without the high purchase price.  What these people don't tell you is that the puppies they are selling do not have the temperament of a purebred Newfoundland dog.  The bottom line is anyone who breeds a Newfoundland dog to another breed is producing "mutts".  While there is nothing wrong with a mutt, no matter what the breed mix, such puppies can be found in animal shelters throughout the country.  If you want a dog with the characteristics and temperament of a Newfoundland dog, your only option is to purchase a purebred Newfoundland dog from a reputable, responsible breeder.
